The Hindustani slide guitar is a new instrument in the Indian classical music idiom, having evolved out of two distinct instrument traditions: the Hawaiian steel guitar and the Indian vichitra veena. Today the instrument is featured at the top festivals of Indian classical music around the world and has received international recognition. Hindustani slide guitarist, Joel 'Veena' Eisenkramer takes us through the instrument's storied history, discussing its design, playing technique and important players in a 1 hour interactive webinar with question and answer session at the end.
This is the first event of its kind to attempt to trace the origin and development of this instrument using historical information from multiple perspectives alongside my own personal interviews and research. We will explore the following angles of discussion:
- Hawaii ---> Calcutta connection
- Playing technique in relation to Vichitra veena and other Indian plucked instruments
- Innovations real and perceived
- Controversy of the "Mohan veena"
