The guitar is one of the most versatile and accessible instruments in the world. Its potential is still being explored in the realm of Indian classical music as artists develop techniques and modify the instrument in order to be able to render the key aspects of the music. In particular, raising the action on the strings and utilizing a slide bar instead of fretting notes allows for the increased melodic accuracy and expression required in Indian classical music. The addition of plucked drone strings also allows for the use of techniques developed for sitar and sarod such as jod, jhala and larant. Finally, finger picks introduce the capability of playing sitar and/or sarod bols on the instrument while allowing for the creation of new, guitar-specific bols.
