A Performance of Rudyard Kipling's Story from The Jungle Books

The story of how Balu the bear, Bagheera the black panther and Kaa the python freed Mowgli, the man-cub, from the clutches of the Bander-Log (monkeys) is one of the most beloved of the tales from Kipling's endearing Jungle Book.  Written in Kipling's Dummerston, VT home, Naulaka, for his daughter in 1890 it has been adapted for stage and screen ever since.

Gordon, Joel and Vidhi first performed "Kaa's Hunting" in 2024 in the living room of Naulaka itself to appreciative guests.  The telling is enlivened by Joel's sound effects, especially on the 20-stringed Hindustani slide guitar of which he is an exponent.  Gordon, who plays the south Indian bamboo flute, also provides sound effects.

The performance takes about 40 minutes and includes audience participation. On August 29, 2024, we were invited to famous author Rudyard Kipling's house that he had built in Dummerston, Vermont in 1892 known as Naulakha. For some good friends' wedding anniversary, Vidhi, Gordon and I presented a tale from Kipling's Jungle Book to a small audience seated in the reading area designed by Kipling to read stories to his children. Vidhi and Gordon played the voices of the characters and narrator while I provided musical accompaniment on the Indian slide guitar, various percussion instruments and electronic sound effects. This is the live recording of that day's iteration of 'Kaa's Hunting'- the tale of young Mowgli's adventures getting to know his neighbors as a jungle-dweller and the true meaning of the all-important Laws of the Jungle.
